The B-List: Legacy. Best explanation for the reasons behind the IE 8 version targeting proposal I’ve seen so far. Thijs (edit) ¶

Joyeur: Billions Served. “P.S. the application is a Rails app. I think these facts put to bed any issues regarding Rails and scaling.” Thijs (edit) ¶

SitePoint: CSS Reference. Great. Thijs (edit) ¶

Ask Edward Tufte: Interface design and the iPhone. “To clarify, add detail.” Thijs (edit) ¶

Hixie’s Natural Log: Mistakes, Sadness, Regret. “[...] I recommend not including the meta tag, or, if you are forced to include it, making sure it says “IE=7”, even once IE8 ships. This seems to me to be the best way to show your support for an open, interoperable Web on the long term.” I think I agree. Thijs (edit) ¶

IEBlog: Compatibility and IE8. Bad idea. Adding more rendering modes makes it harder to maintaining the engine and harder to build and test web pages. A List Apart and Zeldman seem to like the idea, Dean edwards, Anne van Kesteren, Robert O’Callahan, Ian Hixie, and the Safari developers don’t. Thijs (edit) ¶

Ask 37signals: How is Campfire different than a meeting? “Typing forces people to be more economical in what they communicate. There’s a lot less extraneous chatter in a Campfire chat than there is in a typical meeting.” That’s why we love it. Thijs (edit) ¶

Stephen Fry: Social networking through the ages. “My point is this: what an irony! For what is this much-trumpeted social networking but an escape back into that world of the closed online service of 15 or 20 years ago?” Thijs (edit) ¶

Wilber loves Apple. Better Gimp for OS X. Thijs (edit) ¶

Ask 37signals: Why did you restart Highrise?. “As you can see, these lessons are nothing new. We’ve been preaching these ideas for a long time, but living them is so much harder. When we let the core principles of Getting Real slide, not even we could produce software worth a damn.” Thijs (edit) ¶

Stuck in the middle: Psychopaths in the software industry. “Normal people may be more in sheer numbers, but in terms of real power the psychopaths have the upper hand. Heck, most normal people don’t even know that these people exist, or what the problem is. They are so utterly duped and manipulated that they don’t know they are in a prison.” Thijs (edit) ¶

Astheria: The Elements of Design Applied to the Web. Nice examples. Thijs (edit) ¶

Google Groups: Amsterdam.rb. Amsterdam’s Ruby User Group. First meeting will be on Monday the 28th of January, which is my birthday so I won’t be there. Thijs (edit) ¶

hackety org: This Hack Was Not Properly Planned. “Hacking, at heart, will continue to be something of spontaneous order, something of anarchy, and the landscape of hacking is something which comes from human action but is not of human design.” Thijs (edit) ¶
